Forth Worth is well-known city in the state of Texas in the United States. It is the 18th largest US city, and the 5th in its own state. It is also one of the largest cultural and economic centers belonging to the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolis, offering several business opportunities like real estate.

The Mexican-American War

The history of Fort Worth, Texas stretches back to the Mexican-American War in 1846 where Major General William Jenkins Worth served as second in command to General Zachary Taylor. Taylor’s army was encamped near the Rio Grande, as part of the detachment assigned to Texas following its annexation into the United States on December 29, 1945.

The Mexican-American War was the result of tensions between Mexico and the newly formed Republic of Texas – prior to its annexation – following Texas’ victory over the Mexicans in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. The Battle of San Jacinto put an end to the rebellion of the Texans against the dictatorial rule of President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna of Mexico, who was forced to sign treaties with the Texans recognizing their independence the day following the battle.

The Mexican War sparked after a numerically superior Mexican cavalry unit attacked and massacred a patrol of American dragoons on April 23, 1846. The act prompted then President Polk of the United States to address Congress, who afterwards made a declaration of war on the Mexicans. Taylor and Worth were responsible for the troops sent to go to combat against Texas’ southern neighbor.

One of Taylor’s remarkable feats during the war was the difficult yet successful siege of the Bishop’s Palace in Monterrey, Mexico. Worth reportedly risked himself yet managed to escape personal injury as he and his troops transported their heavy weapons and ammunition under constant heavy fire. The terrain was unfriendly to the Americans, who had to carry the armament while negotiating sheer cliff faces.

General Worth was also responsible for capturing the city of Puebla and for entering Mexico City itself. Worth also took down the Mexican flag in the Mexican National Palace.

After The War

After the war, General Worth was assigned command of the Department of Texas in 1849. One of his first actions was to propose building ten forts along the west Texas frontier, which begins from Eagle Pass and until the confluences of the West and Clear Forks of the Trinity River.

However, General Worth became afflicted with cholera and died from it on May 7, 1849. He was then succeeded by William S. Harney, a key figure in the Indian Peace Commission. Upon his instatement, General Harney commanded Major Ripley A. Arnold to search for a site where he could a build a fort in close proximity to the confluence of the West and Clear Forks.

Barely a month after General Worth died, Major Arnold established a post on the Trinity River’s shores which he called ”Camp Worth.” This camp was moved to an overlooking bluff over the mouth of the Clear Fork, where Arnold found George Farmer. Farmer would go on to open the first sutler’s store in Fort Worth, a name which was granted by the U.S. War Department on November 14, 1849.

Although settlers have started to pour into the Fort Worth area earlier, it was not until after September 17, 1853 would inhabitants settle into the fort itself. The U.S. Army had evacuated the fort in favor of forts further west, and the settlers saw this as an opportunity to take the fort for themselves.

Fort Worth Today

Today, Fort Worth is one of the busiest cities in the state of Texas. It is home to several well-known buildings that are all located in its downtown area. These buildings include the Sundance Square, Fort Worth Convention Center and the Bass Performance Hall.

The Sundance Square is a collection of buildings that span across an area 16 blocks wide. The square is home to several restaurants, nightclubs, boutiques, museums, live theatres and art galleries.

Forth Worth Convention Center is an arena that is capable of seating at most 11,200 persons. It had once been the home of the Fort Worth Fire and Brahmas ice hockey teams. The Forth Worth Cavalry football team also had its home court in the convention center, as well as the San Antonio Spurs temporarily. The most significant event seen in the center is the United States’ defeat of Switzerland during the Davis Cup finals.

Davos is a winter and summer ski resort village located in the heart of the Graubünden in the east of Switzerland. In the early 90’s, Davos became famous for hosting the World Economic Forum, an annual winter gathering of international politicians and financiers who represented a transnational elite.

Davos is famous as the host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual meeting of global political and business elites, which is often referred to as simply Davos. It is also known as a winter sports area, including serving as the site of the annual Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament, which is hosted by the HC Davos local hockey team.

Davos became a popular destination for the rich and ailing because the microclimate in the high valley was deemed excellent by doctors and recommended for lung disease patients. For example Robert Louis Stevenson, who suffered from tuberculosis, wintered in Davos in 1880 at the recommendation of his Edinburgh doctor, Dr. George Balfour. Arthur Conan Doyle wrote an article about skiing in Davos in 1899. Davos is also the setting of Thomas Mann’s novel Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain), which takes place at a sanatorium.

Subsequently, Davos became a famous ski resort, especially with tourists from the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. After a high peak in the 1970s and 1980s, the two-part city finally re-established itself as a leading, and less high-profile, tourist attraction.

PLACE TO VISIT

Kirchner Museum Davos, Open Tuesday through Sunday. Established in honor of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the German Expressionist painter. Opened in 1992, it is home to the world’s largest collection of the artist’s work. The museum building was designed by the Zürich architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer. It attracts great attention in architectural circles. Adults: CHF 10, Senior Citizen: CHF 8, Children and Students CHF 5, Groups (10+): CHF 8.

Winter Sports Museum, While in the winter wonderland of Davos, visit the Winter Sport Museum. This museum holds a large collection of winter sport equipment and documents donated by the Jürg Kaufmann family. The well-preserved exhibits (sleds, bobsleds, skis, skates, curling material, etc.) document the history of winter sports. Adults CHF 5, Children CHF 3.

Zügenschlucht— Gaze upon a romantic gorge that has a spectacular railway line and a mining museum at the Schmelzboden at 1340 m. While you’re there, explore the Geology Trail between Davos-Monstein and Wiesen.

Lose yourself in the The Schatzalp (1861m), an alpine botanical garden that has such stunning scenery, it inspired German author Thomas Mann to write his novel “The Magic Mountain”, published in 1924. It contains around 800 different species of plants from all over the world and is truly impressive in June and July, when flowers are in bloom.

When people hear the word ”Tissot” they may not immediately recognize it as a watch brand, but that it is. Tissot was founded in 1853 by Charles-Felicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile who set up shop in Switzerland.

Known as ”innovators by tradition”, Tissot has achieved many ”firsts” in the watchmaking industry. Tissot has been known to make watches out of bizarre materials such as plastic and wood. In 1971 the company produced an all plastic watch called the IDEA 2201. The municipality of Davos lies nestled in a lush valley between two Swiss mountain ranges. It snakes through the valley alongside the Landwasser River (Landwasserstrasse.) A person may get two entirely different impressions of Davos depending upon whom he asks. Davos is a city of dual personalities, so to speak. Ask a sports enthusiast or vacation buff, and one will hear of the marvelous skiing. Ask a business person or economist, and you’ll hear of Davos, seat of politics, business and economy. After all, it is the host city to the most renowned economic summit in Switzerland, the World Economic Forum.

Granted, its reputation as a winter sports haven precedes Davos’ suit-and-tie image by some 100 years. One of the earliest sporting events to be held there was speed skating. Davos was home to numerous speed skating championships beginning in the late 1800s.

Hockey followed closely on the heels of speed skating. The city is still home to the Spengler Cup championship. This annual tournament rivals only the Stanley Cup in longevity. It is hosted by Davos’ own hockey club, which was founded in 1921. Each year between Christmas and New Year’s Day the club welcomes teams from around the world.

When it comes to winter sports though, Davos is most famous for its skiing. Its reputation as a stellar ski area has been well established since the 1800s. Of course, many changes have occurred since then. New technologies have led to a ski resort town that draws thousands of tourists yearly. Investors have poured mightily into the city. It is currently a favorite holiday destination for visitors from the UK and the Netherlands.

In 1971, Davos adopted a new face. This one was about as far from ice hockey and skiing as a city can get. It was the face of economics. The city became host to the annual World Economic Forum. Visitors in business suits instead of ski parkas began to converge upon the valley. They have done so every year since. They include representatives from such high profile organizations as Amnesty International and Oxfam. In fact, hundreds of organizations are represented at the World Economic Forum. The summit attracts business people, entrepreneurs, social activists, economists, educators and communicators from around the globe. They meet together to discuss solutions to poverty, injustice, war, global warming and genocide. They brainstorm ways to shape the world economy in ways that are mutually beneficial to all countries. They challenge each other to make a difference in their own homes and countries.

The World Economic Forum, a non-profit organization based in Geneva, has become a global force. It carries enormous political clout. This is due in part to its strategic positioning of political figures within the organization’s governance. The foundation places influential people in positions such as the board of directors. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is one example of such a leader. This doesn’t just give it leverage in all the right places. It also lends it an air of credibility in the eyes of the public.

This credibility doesn’t hurt Davos’ credibility either. Davos, still a winter sports Mecca, has also earned a reputation as a seat of thinkers, movers and shakers. Its many sides have given it a permanent position in the public eye and the world map.
